Frequently Asked Questions
Travellers need a valid passport to enter Vanuatu. The passport must be valid for six months beyond your intended stay. This entitles you to stay 30-90 days.
My Vanuatu holiday packages include direct flights to Port Vila from most major Australian airports.
- Direct flights from Brisbane take 2 hours and 50 minutes.
- Direct flights from Sydney take 3 hours.
- Direct flights from Melbourne take 4 hours.
The official currency in Vanuatu is Vanuatu Vatu (VT). Approximately AUD$1 equals 80 vatu, although this changes due to exchange rates. Australian Dollars and major credit cards (MasterCard and Visa) are also widely accepted. There are several ATMs and other money exchange services around Vanuatu, particularly in Port Vila and at the Bauerfield International Airport.
Domestic flights and ferries travel between the islands, but when on land, buses, taxis, and hire cars are ideal. Vans with a B in front of the number plate are considered buses while small cars with a T before the number plate are taxis. Most taxis are metered and cost around 100 vatu per km, but it’s best to ask for a price before setting off. A trip around town on the bus costs approximately 150 vatu, but the buses don’t run on a schedule or specific route, so you’re expected to hail them down on the street. Cars can be hired without an international driver’s license.
Visas are not required for stays less than 30 days. The traveller must:
- Hold a passport valid at least six months beyond the period of intended stay with one blank visa page
- Hold proof of sufficient funds
- Hold proof of confirmed onward/return airline tickets
- Hold documents showing proof of purpose of trip
- Hold all documents required for the next destination
- Hold a visa for the next country, where applicable
- Confirm with their airline that boarding will be permitted without a visa as these conditions are subject to change
